July is for Collective Effervescence

"For a moment, it feels like everyone is watching the same thing, feeling the same thing, and becoming part of something bigger than themselves."

This July is unlike any other. America turns 250 years old. The World Cup is uniting fans across three countries and 16 cities, building toward the final on July 19. Fireworks, flags, packed stadiums, and roaring crowds. This month is practically engineered for something psychologists call collective effervescence.

And it turns out, that feeling isn't just fun. It's good for you.

What is collective effervescence?

Coined by sociologist Émile Durkheim over a century ago, collective effervescence describes the rush of unity and emotional energy people feel when they gather together at concerts, parades, ceremonies, protests, and yes, sporting events. Psychologist Shira Gabriel describes it as that feeling of connection to others and a sense that something sacred is happening.

Here's the research that makes this more than just a nice feeling: people who experience collective effervescence report greater life satisfaction, a stronger sense of meaning, and real feelings of awe. Some studies suggest up to three-quarters of people experience some version of this every single week. It is one of the simplest, most accessible paths to joy and connection that exists.

Why kids need this too

At It's Yoga Kids®, we talk constantly about individual tools — breath, mindfulness, movement. But children also need the experience of being part of something bigger than themselves. Watching the World Cup with a roomful of cheering fans. Singing the national anthem at a Fourth of July celebration. Moving through a yoga sequence in sync with a whole class of kids, breathing together, cheering each other on.

This is collective effervescence in its purest, most kid-sized form — and it builds something screens and solo activities simply cannot: the felt experience of belonging.

5 ways to experience collective effervescence this July:

🎉 Celebrate together — gather with neighbors for fireworks or a 250th birthday parade for America

⚽ Watch the World Cup as a group — cheer together, gasp together, celebrate goals together

🧘 Practice yoga in a group class — moving and breathing in sync with others is collective effervescence on a mat

🏃 Join team sports or group activities — the shared chase of a win is a built-in dose of connection

🎶 Sing or chant together — anthems, camp songs, and group mantras all activate this same sense of unity

The IYK® connection

Every It's Yoga Kids® class is designed around this same principle. When children breathe together, move together, and celebrate each other's wins on the mat, they are not just building strength and flexibility. They are experiencing the very thing researchers say builds life satisfaction and a deeper sense of belonging.

This July, as the world celebrates 250 years of independence and cheers together for the World Cup, we hope your family finds your own version of collective effervescence — whether that's on a yoga mat, in a stadium, or on your living room couch with the game on.

Stay Strong. Be Calm. Celebrate together. 🇺🇸⚽🌿
